------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Transcription of the contents of the turquoise three-ring binder whose first page begins: COMPILED BY: [Sticker] HAYNES LINE BJCH ARCHIVE #3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The turquoise three-ring binder whose contents are described herein contains detail- ed information regarding the Haynes Line. Included within this folder are lines of family names, as well as specific materials, such as a composition that relates the Civil War experiences of John Lumpkin Haynes. Owing to the decaying qualities of the turquoise three-ring binder, as well as the tendency of many of the punched holes in the pages to rip, I have transferred the contents of BJHC ARCHIVE #3 to a contemporary blue three-ring binder, and I have placed each sheet of paper in an individual plastic document-protector, for the better preservation of these documents. Transcription started 3 October 2005. Skirven ------------------------------------ Baltimore Maryland, 1931 (My note - No one remembers how the olf "I.U." Church got its name - ) p. 40 . Abraham Haynes testified on June 7, [1764] that his father wanted to repair the fence that enclosed the Plantation that was in possession of the widow Potter, and that, old Robert Meeks showed him the line between "I.U." (Plantation) and Philip Hizzard's land and that he also showed him a "pocason" which stood next to the Plantation of "I.U." p. 42 - "Abraham Haynes lived in the village. On February 10, 1774 he bought from William Cowarden and his wife, Susanah, a lot "adjoining the church lands." The lot contained one and one-half acres being part of "Forrest Resurveyed." This property is no owned by the Parish [&] "I.U." and is known as the "Sexton's House Property." There are no records to show when the house was built, but it [looks] like it was built long before Abraham Haynes hbought it and made his home there. p. [42] - In 1774, Abraham Haynes bought from William Edwarden and his wife Susannah this property, an acre and a half of the "Forrest Resurveyed" lands left to Susannah Cowarden by her brother, Richard Johnson. He and his wife Sarah Haynes, lived there until 1793, when it passed to Thomas Jones." [p. 51] - "Christ Church at "I.U." In the early marriage records lists two William Haynes circa 1730. The marriage records record that William Haynes married Mary Bennett 27 April 1737, and William Haynes married Mary Schooling, 4 Aug. ( ? ). It entirely poss- ible that this is the same William Haynes and that he married twice. If this is true this William Haynes could have been the father of Abraham Haynes Sr. Abraham Haynes, Sr. married Sarah Ricketts, 21 Jan. 1773 and they were the par- ents of a son Abraham haynes Jr. Abraham Haynes Jr. was born 1775-(died during the Civil War, 1860-65) and reared on the coastal plain of Maryland. In early manhood he moved south to North Carolina where he met and married a Miss Kennedy. Miss Kennedy app- arently died and then Abraham married Lusinda_________?. Abraham Haynes Jr. was the father of eight children: John, James, Mary, Polly, Abraham III, Frank, Andrew, and Wesley. John Haynes, son of Abraham Haynes Jr. and Miss Kennedy was born 15 May 1804, in North Carolina. In about 1816 Abraham Haynes Jr. moved to Green County Ga. near Pennfield, his home was on the first site of Mercer College. John Haynes married Elizabeth McKnight, 3 Sept. 1829, their first child was William Dawson Haynes, born 5 July 1830. Abraham Haynes Jr. and John Haynes and their families moved to Troup County Ga. in 1831. In 1838 both families moved to Talladega County, (Now Clay County) Ala, locating about four miles west of Ashland in the Old Liber- ty Church community. John and Elizabeth were the parents of the following children: 1. William Dawson 5 July 1830-1 Dec. 1927 2. James Lucas 22 Feb 1832 3. Mary Ann 11 June 1836 4. Joshua 13 March 1837 5. The exact date of their arrival has not been determined. The early days of Jamestown was those of almost inhuman livability for the settlers. Disease, starvation and attacks from Indians took their toll of lives and property, the town was burned repeatedly. Captain John Smith has been given credit in the pages of history of saving Jamestown. However, it appears that had it not been for Richard Pace and Chanco in 1622, the settlement would have been completely wiped out. An Indian Chief, Powatan had been friendly with John Smith and the colonists. When he died in the 1620's, his brother Opechankano, became chief. This new chief resented the white man and scheming as [servants] were living near the households of the colonists or worked to completely destroy the colonists. Richard Pace had taken into his home, the Indian boy, Chanco, as perhaps a playmate for his son, George. As a matter of course, the Indian boy was taught the Christian religion. Chanco idolized his master and his white boy play-mate. When the word was spread among the Indians for the massacre, March 22, 1622, Chanco was conscience stricken. He felt a certain loyalty to his Indian ancest- ors. Yet, the teachings of the Christian religion had taught him that murder was sinful. Chanco's Christian spirit was triumphant. He told his master Richard Pace of the impending danger. Pace at once secured his own household and went hurrid- ly acrodd the James River to warn the colonists of Jamestown. The colonists made ample preparation for the Indian raids and consequently much of Jamestown and its settlers were saved. However, word of the massacre did not reach outlying settlements and they were totally destroyed. There were 31 plantations destroyed and 341 men, women, and children known killed. Religion was an important factor in the early days of Jamestown. One of the first buildings built was a church. Samuel Maycock was brough to Jamestown from England as a minister to the church. He was given a grant of land, north of Jamestown on the James River and the plantation was named Maycock. After the March 22 massacre, the infant daughter of Samuel Maycock, Sarah, was found alive. Other swellers of the Maycock plantation had been killed by the Indians. it is thought that Sarah was about four months old at the time of the Indian raid. About 1637 she married George, son of Richard and Isabella Pace, and moved to the Maycock Plantation. George and Sarah had two known children, Richard Pace II and Elizabeth Pace. Apparently George and Sarah lived on Maycock Plantation the balance of their lives. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ PAGE 14 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ PACE LINEAGE RICHARD AND ISABELL PACE Richard Pace, born Circa 1590, and Isabell came to America from England, received a grant of 600 acres across the James River from Jamestown in 1620, Richard also received another grant of 200 acres in 1626. This plantation was known as "Pace's Paines". Richard and Isabell had a son named George (page 5) GEORGE AND SARAH MAYCOCK George Pace (1620-1657) and Sarah Maycock 91622) were married in 1637, they had a son, Richard and a daughter named Elizabeth (Page 6) RICHARD PACE AND MARY KNOWLS Richard Pace, II, (1638) married Mary and had the following children, Richard III, George, John, and Elizabeth.
